Why should you use the T.O.V.A. in your practice?
Objective Measures
A clinical interview and behavior ratings can tell us about a person’s history and behavior, but they don’t reveal the attentional functioning of a person.
Knowing that someone struggles in class, at work, or in relationships doesn’t explain the challenges they face with maintaining attention and inhibitory control. Clinical interviews, behavior ratings, and the T.O.V.A. are separate, essential parts of an assessment or an evaluation of treatment effects.
Individualized Results
Two people can meet the exact same criteria for ADHD and their attention may function very differently. The T.O.V.A. provides an individualized picture of performance over a sufficiently long task, giving clinicians information that targets not only the broad category of behavioral symptoms but also targets focus, vigilance, and inhibitory control in low and high arousal conditions.
The T.O.V.A. and T.O.V.A. Observation Form provide necessary information that helps identify the underlying reasons for attention and behavior related challenges. They help complete the picture for assessment and evaluation of treatment response.
Who Uses the T.O.V.A.?
The T.O.V.A. is for use by qualified healthcare professionals, researchers, and clinical trials.
Do more for your patients
Assessment
Proven accuracy: The T.O.V.A. correctly identified 87% of non-ADHD and 90% of ADHD subjects (discriminant analysis). No test, including the T.O.V.A., can diagnose A.D.H.D.
Evaluate treatment
Informed decisions: The T.O.V.A. aids in in the evaluation of treatment by providing objective measures that can inform clinical decision making
Monitor attention and treatment over time
People change: The T.O.V.A. allows you to observe variations in attention and inhibitory control due to changes in treatment, illness, aging, and life events.
Assess neurological disorders and injuries
Not just ADHD: The T.O.V.A. assists in identifying attention deficits from other causes such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), sleep disorders, trauma, and other sources.
Conduct research
An objective tool: The T.O.V.A. is a well established, widely cited research tool used to study both normal and abnormal conditions.

“Not only does T.O.V.A. provide an objective means of diagnosing ADHD (especially when hyperactivity is not present) and monitoring medication response, but it is valuable in assessing attentional functions in a wide range of neurological disorders that may have attentional and arousal abnormalities.”
